Day by day Massachusettes Avenue through Cambridge, Massachusettes becomes emptier of its economic lifeblood – traditional retail stores. Of course the economy is to blame, but Cambridge’s famously huge rents are not helping the problem. What can be done? This is my neighborhood, and seeing it wither is depressing. I’m looking for solutions for creative reuse of the many vacant storefronts.

katy,
your blog fascinating. in just a few minutes i learned more about the demise of the forest cafe down the street from me and how the owner of the large jewelry store in the heart of harvard sq fled without a trace. each storefront represents a private story; collectively they represent an aspect of the condition of our nation’s economy. bravo!
Great blog. I’d be curious to see an inquiry and a post about the empty former Crate and Barrel space in Harvard Square, which hosted a temporary design installation for a bit, and is now under renovation. I know it’s not on Mass Ave but it was an interesting use of empty space. And I am both curious and worried as to what’s going in there next. Another cell phone store? Another bank?
Rekha, thanks much. That was a great exhibit of the old Design Research products. I just wish we could have gone in! No word yet on what’s going in there next.
Excellent blog! This is my neighborhood too and the empty store fronts are really making me sad!
