I’m really hoping that whomever owns the retail block that once held Heartwood Furniture, Il Panino, Looney Tunes Records, Roka, the futon store and some others has a master plan to fill all these sad, empty storefronts, but somehow I doubt it. Once home to the late great Orson Welles Movie Theater, this block is striking in its near desolation, prompting many a wtf? among passerby. All that seems to be left is the pricey modern home funishing store Bo Concept. The sad closing of Il Panino was chronicled here.
Speaking of movie theaters, what’s the likelihood of ever seeing another one along Mass Ave, maybe even in the old Orson Welles space? Cambridge doesn’t need anymore highend retail, but a nice second run theater that serves dinner and cocktails would be pretty sweet.
